October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!!!!!
Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota is participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by promoting early screenings for breast cancer detection. We have been working hard to promote our Breast Cancer Awareness Program as part of our Health Education and Prevention Program through presentations and educational classes. We have been recruiting young women (ages 20-30) to help educate and promote Breast Cancer Awareness (including early Mammography screening) to their mothers, aunts and elder sisters who may or may not have the knowledge they need about breast cancer due to various cultural barriers (i.e. language barriers). We provide services to help alleviate frustrations and confusion among Lao women during their screening processes (including setting up appointments, providing transportation, arranging health insurance papers and instructions and interpreting both at the screening site and at the office of various doctor's notes, appointment reminders and insurance papers).
LACM is aware that Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the United States. In the past decade, breast cancer has affected many women in the Lao community. Confused and frustrated, family members have approached LACM for help. Since then, LACM has been helping family members and survivors as well as those currently affected by breast cancer deal with various issues related to the stages of cancer from the first diagnosis through treatment and sometimes during the lost of a family member to breast cancer. We encourage the Lao women to participate in early screening as part of our Health Prevention Program.
